MiniSpeed is a GPS speedometer that lives in your iPhone's Dynamic Island as a Live Activity, so your speed stays visible without opening the app.

MiniSpeed requires iOS 26 or later and a Dynamic Island iPhone (iPhone 14 Pro or later Pro models, and iPhone 15 and newer).

No. MiniSpeed has no accounts, no ads, and no analytics. Your speed is computed entirely on-device from GPS — MiniSpeed doesn't run its own servers or upload your data. The only network activity is Apple's standard App Store purchase and restore.

MiniSpeed asks for When In Use location so it can calculate your speed on-device while the speedometer is running. If you deny access, MiniSpeed shows an alert linking to Settings. The blue "location in use" indicator while MiniSpeed is backgrounded is expected — it's how iOS shows the speedometer is still tracking. Location isn't used for ads, analytics, or sharing, and you can revoke access anytime in iOS Settings → MiniSpeed.

Start the speedometer in MiniSpeed. The compact Dynamic Island shows a gauge icon and your current speed with its unit; long-press it to expand to speed, average, and a speed-history graph. A matching banner appears on the Lock Screen.

On the main screen, a pulsing dot beside the unit means the speedometer is running.

While the speedometer is running, rotating to landscape switches the main screen to the Lock Screen layout at 2×, with buttons hidden. Rotating does nothing while the speedometer is off — that's by design.

If you turn the speedometer off — including from Siri — while in landscape, the main screen automatically snaps back to portrait.

Full-screen or immersive apps — like Maps in landscape, video players, and games — hide the status bar, and the Dynamic Island hides with it. The speedometer keeps running in the background; the Island reappears when you leave the app or rotate back.

In iOS 27's landscape Dynamic Island, the compact view drops the unit and shows digits only, since that slot is much narrower in landscape.

While charging in landscape, StandBy shows a minimal speed bubble; tap it to fill the screen with the Lock Screen layout at 2×. In Night Mode, the bubble gets a red tint — that's standard system behavior, not something MiniSpeed controls.

Your average is calculated from the moment you turn the speedometer on. By default, time spent stopped doesn't count, so a red light or stop sign won't drag your average down, and the speed-history graph pauses while you're stopped.

Rally Mode (Settings → Advanced) changes how stops are counted: with it on, your average keeps falling in real time while you're stopped, instead of pausing. It affects the average and graph only, and is off by default.

MiniSpeed shows 0 when GPS doesn't have a fix yet or reports an invalid reading, and always when the speedometer is off.

Open MiniSpeed and choose your unit — Miles (mph), Kilometers (km/h), or Knots (kt, for boating) — in the unit picker, which shows the full names; readouts elsewhere use the short labels.

Choose from 14 accent colors in MiniSpeed; your choice applies throughout the app and across every Live Activity presentation.

This Settings option (under Color) switches your Home Screen icon to a version tinted in your chosen accent color. Choosing white restores the default icon.

Apple's "You have changed the icon" alert appears any time an app changes its own Home Screen icon — including when you use Match App Icon to Color, or change color while it's on. This is imposed by iOS and can't be suppressed.

If your Home Screen uses the Clear or Tinted icon appearance, iOS re-derives the icon's look from the glyph's brightness. Colored glyphs are darker than white, so a color-matched icon looks noticeably fainter in Clear mode than the default white icon — this is system behavior with no fix. Color matching shows up best in the Default and Dark appearances.

Every MiniSpeed icon variant renders its glyph at 50% brightness in the system's Dark appearance — this is intentional.

MiniSpeed supports Enable, Disable, Get Live Activity State, and Get Current Speed through Siri and Shortcuts — for example, "How fast am I going in MiniSpeed?" and Siri will speak the answer. These actions also work from automations, like starting MiniSpeed automatically when you connect to CarPlay.

That bare phrase can't be claimed by third-party apps like MiniSpeed. As a workaround, create a personal Shortcut named "How fast am I going" that runs MiniSpeed's Get Current Speed action — then that exact phrase will trigger it.

With Start Automatically on, MiniSpeed turns the speedometer on every time the app comes to the foreground. One nuance: if you turn the speedometer off and then leave and reopen the app, it turns back on; turning it off while staying in the app sticks.

It prevents your iPhone from auto-locking while MiniSpeed is open.

Check Settings (in-app) → Advanced → Frequent Updates. If it shows "Disabled," you've turned off More Frequent Updates in iOS Settings → Apps → MiniSpeed → Live Activities — re-enable it there. That iOS subpage only appears after the speedometer has run at least once.
